PROJECT
UX OF SKIN II – DECORATED MEMORIES
- Timeline: 1 Week
- Brief: Design an experience that externalises the nature of memory
- Research Methods Artefact Analysis & Direct Storytelling.
- Team Members: Zhaolu Song, Moxue Jia, Shiwen Shen(Svaney), Cat Achieng
- Key Deliverables: An Embodied Experience / Prototype
Our first design solution was to re-decorate ‘broken’ items in order to give them a new life. For last weeks’ prototype, we used items from the only two participants who were okay to have their sentimental items re-decorated.
The initial effort that was put into creating beautiful art on the artefacts but wasn’t practical at all. Results from our research showed that most people are not okay with having their sentimental items changed or tampered with.
This week our main focus is on working to make the ‘new’ memories more meaningful by mostly focusing on the findings of direct storytelling.
We explored and tested different strategies but they all resulted in dead-ends due to the lack of resources.

PROTOTYPE
PROJECTOR PROTOTYPE
We decided to digitally decorate the artefacts that we had borrowed from the participants.
Projector mapping onto the artefact itself was the best solution as it meant that none of the items would end up with any markings or damages on them.
Each participant received a see-through paper and they were free to draw or write anything that represented good memories. The participant would then be able to swipe their paper on the provided holder and their art would be illuminated on to their sentimental item.

OUTCOME
FEEDBACK
We received mostly positive feedback on the prototype, many said they liked the interactivity of the prototype.
During the prototype demonstration, participants had to first draw on to their paper. This ended up creating an awkward silence as the rest of the class had to quietly wait for them to draw. In the future, we would consider adding fillers or extra activities to our presentation so that the awkward and idle silence is avoided.
